KARACHI: Pakistan’s young centre-half Muhammad Tousiq Arshad has set sights on achieving global accolades after being named Asian Player of the Year.

“I have reached my first aim of becoming the best player in Asia, and now I’ve set my eyes on attaining recognition at world level,” Tousiq told The Express Tribune.

“I would love to help Pakistan win all the available tournaments and even though personal records do matter, I want to become a team player and help the greenshirts go back to the glory days.”

Tousiq was announced as Asian Player of the Year by the Asian Hockey Federation in the Congress held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 31.

The 21-year-old belongs to a new breed of players in Pakistan who possess the nation’s traditional skills as well as the speed of modern hockey.

The centre-half received the same award in 2010, while he was also declared 2009’s young emerging player and named player of the tournament during the Asian Champions Trophy held in Japan last year.

“Whatever I have been enjoying today is because of the prayers of my parents. It is also due to the hard work of my coach [late Ustad Aslam Roda], who was also my uncle,” said a grateful Tousiq.

Tousiq’s credentials include being the youngest ever Olympian, and at present, he is part of the senior probables for the 2014 Asian Games, being trained under head coach Shahnaz Sheikh.

“I congratulate Tousiq for this special achievement,” said Sheikh.

“Apart from being a skilful centre-half, he has also motivated other players to fight till the final whistle.”
